June 17, 2019 Daily Devotional Have you ever played the “Would you rather….” game? It’s one where you’re given 2 choices, both of which are sometimes not good. For example, would you rather eat snot or lick the bottom of your shoe? (neither) Playing this game reminds me of how differently we’re all wired. It’s interesting to hear the choices people make, and why they make them. Here’s a pleasant “Would you rather…” question: would you rather have a new car or have someone clean your house weekly for the next 5 years? For me, the clean house wins every time because my primary love language is Acts of Service. If someone wants to please me, they can make my bed, fold a load of laundry, or wash my car. I enjoy gifts and good conversations, but I really feel affirmed when others DO things for me. It’s one of the reasons that my brothers and my brother in-law are my heroes. They’re my “go-to guys” for minor repairs at my house. They often ask me if there’s anything that needs to be fixed and sometimes see problems before I do and take care of them. I’m extremely grateful for their Acts of Service. Here at St. Luke’s, three church members help me each week by preparing materials for Sunday school. These ladies work tirelessly cutting, taping, sorting, and anything else that needs to be done. These Acts of Service are truly a blessing to me! “We each have a primary love language which speaks more deeply to us than all the others. Discovering each other’s language and speaking it regularly is the best way to keep love alive in a marriage or any other relationship.” (Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages) l. Words of affirmation – using words to build up another person. 2. Gifts – giving a person something that says, “I was thinking of you” 3. Acts of Service – doing something for someone that you know they would like. 4. Quality time –giving someone your undivided attention. 5. Physical touch – physical expressions of love God created each of us to be loved in different ways; “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” (Psalm 139:1-3) Would you rather receive a compliment, or receive a gift? Would you rather have a good conversation with someone, or get a nice hug? What’s your love language? Even more importantly, what are the love languages of your family members and friends? They were part of “Rebuilding Day” - an annual event by Rebuilding Together OKC that brings volunteers together to renovate homes for low-income seniors and families. Enjoy this video of their day!
